Huen Tsang Retreat Center Bordharan

Triratna Bauddha Mahasangha is known as Triratna Buddhist Community Globally. At the core of it, there is a Sangha of ordained members called Dhammacharis and Dhammacharinis. They are committed for life to practice and propagate the Dhamma for the welfare of many. They run various Buddhist activities, Dhamma training and retreat centres all over India.

Most (not all) of its Indian members were converted to Buddhism upon the inspiration of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. Principles and approaches to Buddhism upheld by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar are already established in the foundation and functioning of Triratna Baudddha Mahasangha giving the biggest hope to achieve a dream of Prabuddha Bharat. Buddhists converted from various caste backgrounds are its members ensuring a strong move towards a casteless India.

Triratna Bauddha Mahasangha was founded by Ven. Urgen Sangharakshita in 1968 in London. Ordination of 12 people marked a beginning of Triratna Sangha. Initially, it was known as Friends of the Western Buddhist Order and in India, it was known as Trailokya Bauddha Mahasangha Sahayaka Gana. In 2012 it was renamed TRIRATNA BUDDHIST COMMUNITY and TRAIRTNA BAUDDHA MAHA SANGHA in India.

In 1977 Ven. Urgen Sangharakshita encouraged his senior disciple Dhammachari Lokamitra to visit and meet his followers in India. Ven. Urgen Sangharakshita had many disciples among newly converted followers of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. Dhammachari Lokamitra started activities in Pune in 1977-78. Few more senior disciples of Sangharakshita came in to help Dhammachari Lokamitra. Dhammachari Dr Veerabhadra, Dhammacharini Padmasuri, Dhammachari Padmavajra spends a lot of time helping establish Sangha in India in the eighties.

Presently we work in several different states in India. Most of our work is in Maharastra. Our major institutions are Saddhamapradip Retreat centre Bhaje, Dist. Pune. Mahavihara Dapodi Pune, Hsuen Tsang Retreat Centre Bordharan Dist wardha, Nagarjuna Training Insittute, Nagaloka, Nagpur, Urgen Sangharakshita Dhyan Bhavana Kendra, Nanded. We run various city-based Dhamma centres. Since 1978 we shared Dhamma with thousands of people. We clarified and taught the meaning of Dr Babasahebs Dhammakranti.

Order members – Dhammacharinis and Dhammacharis ( Why Dhammachari) The ordained individuals in Triratna Sangha are not mere Upasakas and they are not Bhikkhus either. Following the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkars thought we needed a new Dhammasevak, one among common people yet fully committed to practice and preach the Dhamma. Therefore, Dhammachari or Dhammacharini means Dhamma Practitioners, a word that was used in Pali scriptures with this meaning were adopted.

Dhammamitras – Individuals who come in contact with the Triratna Centres or keep in touch with Dhammachari or Dhammacharini, find that this sangha is their spiritual family, they want to follow Buddha-Dhamma and wanted to deepen their connection request to be Dhammamitras. In a simple ceremony, they are accepted as Mitras. They keep closely connected with the sangha through centres and keep learning, practising and supporting the Dhamma activities at the centres.

Our Social engagement – Members of Triratna Bauddha Mahasangha responds to society as an integral part of their practice of Dhamma. They want to extend their compassionate hand to the needy in society. From the eighties, we started medical, vaccination, mother and child care projects to look after the health of people living in slums. Through Balwadis we served hundreds of children, looked after early education and healthy growth. We ran about 18 Hostels for boys and girls over five different states in India. We responded to the Latur earthquake, did a lot of rehabilitation work and started two boys and one girl hosted for affected people, these hostels are still running. We responded to the earthquake disaster in Bhuj Gujrat and started hostels for affected children. We also responded to tsunami-affected areas. We responded to the society in several states during the Covid-19 epidemic and provided help and support to many people. We provided food and grains and support in education to children and provided counselling services through different activities.
